    Permits & Code Compliance

    Navigating San Diego's 2026
    Kitchen Requirements

As of January 1, 2026, updated California Energy Code (Title 24) and CALGreen (Part 11) standards are in effect. Optimal handles every permit, inspection, and code requirement through San Diego's Development Services Department — you never deal with city bureaucracy directly.

    Electrical Circuits (2026)

California requires a minimum of two 20-amp small appliance circuits for kitchen countertops, plus dedicated circuits for the refrigerator, dishwasher, and garbage disposal. All countertop receptacles must be GFCI-protected. AFCI protection is required for all new kitchen circuits.

    Ventilation & Range Hoods

2026 California Mechanical Code requires kitchen exhaust ventilation. Range hoods must meet minimum CFM ratings based on cooking surface BTU output. Recirculating hoods require charcoal filtration — ducted ventilation directly outdoors is strongly preferred and often required for gas ranges.

    Lighting Mandates (Title 24)

All kitchen lighting must be high-efficacy LED, controlled by a vacancy sensor or dimmer. Standard switch-only lighting no longer meets 2026 compliance requirements. Under-cabinet lighting that connects to the home's electrical system also falls under these standards.

    Simple vs. Full Permits

A kitchen remodel that does not move walls or relocate plumbing may qualify for a Simple "No-Plan" Permit. Open concept conversions, structural beam installations, or any plumbing relocation require a Full Permit through San Diego's DSD. Optimal handles all permitting — you never deal with the city directly.

Working with Dotan was an absolute pleasure. He always found creative, high-quality solutions and never cut corners. Our kitchen remodel was completed ahead of schedule — we immediately moved forward with our bathroom remodel. Same excellent results.

After interviewing several remodeling companies, I chose Optimal. The craftsmanship and precision were outstanding. What really stood out was the follow-up — Dotan personally checked in months later to make sure everything was perfect.

HIRE THIS COMPANY! Gali is the best project manager with incredible expertise. This company rescued me from a terrible experience with another contractor. I interviewed 8 companies total — I went with Optimal and I'm SO GLAD I did.

    Questions & Answers

    Common Questions About
    Kitchen Remodeling in San Diego

A cabinet refresh with new countertops runs $18,000–$38,000. A full kitchen remodel with new cabinets, countertops, and updated plumbing and electrical averages $45,000–$80,000. Luxury custom kitchens with structural changes and premium appliances range $85,000–$160,000+. San Diego costs are above the national average due to local labor rates, California material standards, and 2026 Title 24 requirements.
A countertop and cabinet refresh takes 2–3 weeks. A full kitchen remodel typically runs 4–8 weeks for construction, once permits are approved. The full process — design, permitting, and construction — averages 8–14 weeks from signed contract to final walkthrough. Design-build significantly reduces this timeline by keeping design and construction under one roof.
Most kitchen remodels require at least a Simple "No-Plan" Permit. If you're replacing cabinets and countertops without moving walls or plumbing, a simple permit typically suffices. Any structural changes (removing walls, adding beams), plumbing relocations, or new electrical circuits require a Full Permit through San Diego's DSD. Optimal handles all permitting — you never deal with the city directly.
Design-build means one company handles both architecture/design and physical construction under a single contract. This eliminates the communication gap between a separate architect and contractor — your approved kitchen design is exactly what gets built, with one team accountable for the entire result. It also speeds up the process, since design and permitting can be coordinated internally rather than between two separate firms.
As of January 1, 2026: all kitchen lighting must be high-efficacy LED controlled by vacancy sensors or dimmers; new circuits require AFCI protection; range hoods must meet updated CFM ventilation requirements; and WaterSense-certified faucets are required on new kitchen sink installations. Optimal designs every project to meet these standards from day one, so there are no surprises at inspection.
Absolutely. Our in-house designer guides you through the full selection process — cabinet style and finish, countertop material (quartz, quartzite, marble, granite), tile backsplash, hardware, flooring, appliances, and lighting. We work with multiple vendors so you have genuine options at every price point. You approve every selection before any work begins.
A mid-range kitchen remodel in San Diego typically recoups 60–80% of cost at resale, with well-designed kitchens in premium neighborhoods often recouping more. Kitchen remodels are consistently ranked among the top ROI home improvements. Beyond resale value, a functional, beautiful kitchen dramatically improves daily quality of life and speeds up sale time when you do list.
Yes — most clients stay in their homes during a kitchen remodel. We set up dust barriers, protect all surrounding areas, and clean up every evening. During the active demolition and rough-work phase, your kitchen will be out of service for cooking. We coordinate timelines to minimize disruption and can discuss scheduling around family commitments during the initial consultation.
